One of the most straight-forward and datable glass bottle mold codes I've encountered belongs to the
Owens-Illinois Glass Company.

Formed in 1929 after Owens Glass Company merged with Illinois Glass Company, this company eventually controlled a vast share of the glass bottle manufacturing market. Their first distinctive trademark is often called the "diamond IO mark," and is essentially the combination between the Owens Glass Co. and Illinois Glass Co. trademarks: the letter 'I' within an oval, superimposed on an elongated diamond. In 1954, they changed their manufacturer's mark and eliminated the elongated diamond entirely, leaving just the oval and 'I'.
Dating an Owens-Illinois glass bottle is fairly straight-forward and consistent if you know the following rules:
- If the manufacturer's mark found on the base of the bottle is the diamond IO mark (see Figure 2), then the bottle was produced pre-1954.
- If the manufacturer's mark is just the 'I' in an oval mark, then the bottle was produced after 1954.
- The number directly to the left of the manufacturer's mark is the plant code number. This number corresponds with an exact plant location and the plant's dates of operation (as can be seen in Table 1 below).
- If the logo "Duraglas" appears embossed in script on the bottle's heel, this generally means that the bottle was produced between 1940 and the late-1950s.
- If there appears to be stippling on the base of the bottle, this always means the bottle was manufactured in 1940 or later.
- The number directly to the right of the manufacturer's mark is the date code.
|
Example of a 1944 bottle made in Streator, Illinois. |
- A single-digit number (0-9) without a period following it indicates that the bottle was manufactured between the years 1930-1939. The number corresponds with the specific year in the '30s. Bottle production began in the year 1930, so the number 9 can only mean 1939, not 1929. (For example, if the number is 2, then the year the bottle was manufactured was 1932).
- A single-digit number (0-6) with a period following it indicates that the bottle was manufactured between the years 1940-1946. The period following the number is the only way to distinguish between bottles made in 1930-1932 and 1940-1942. (For example the image above shows a "4 ." next to the trademark, indicating the year 1944).
- Following 1942, from 1943-1946, the year may appear as either a single-digit number followed by a period or as a double-digit number without a period.
- By 1947, the double-digit dating system was completely adopted. (For example, a '51' would indicate the bottle was made in the year 1951).
- On rare occasion you may find a bottle with the 'I' in an oval trademark (meaning post-1954 production) with just a single number for a date code. Like the earlier dating patterns, if the number is not followed by a period, you may assume that the bottle was produced between the years 1954-1959. If the number is followed by a period, it was most likely produced after the year 1960.
- It should also be noted that on super-tiny bottles, Owens-Illinois left off the plant, date, and mold codes entirely, and merely embossed the base with its manufacturer's mark. On smaller-than-average bottles with the 'I' in an oval manufacturer's mark (post-1954), you may sometimes find that the date code is just a single-digit number with/ without a period rather than the usual double-digit number you'd expect to find. (For instance, if the number '5' were found to the 'I' in an oval trademark, you could assume that the bottle was made in 1955).
- Also worthy of note is that the format of date and plant codes on the bases of Pepsi-Cola bottles that Owens-Illinois manufactured were different. (See Figure 3).

My husband found a bottle when they were digging up the road in the village of Spring Green, WI. It has the diamond with the Oval and the I in the middle. It has 14 to the left and a 1 to the right. Underneath,...actually way underneath by the bottom curve of the circle, there is a sideways oval and an H. On the side of the bottle there is the notation 1/2 with an arrow pointing to a ridge half-way up the bottle. There is another 1/2 mark with an arrow pointing down the that same ridge. Any idea when this bottle is from and what was in it? Could someone with knowledge please email me back at fergusonbarb60@yahoo.com? thanks!

What about 12 1 with the diamond and eye I believe mine is from.1930
Delete"If the logo "Duraglas" appears embossed in script on the bottle, this means that it was produced between the years 1940 and 1954."
ReplyDeleteNot true. I have a number of 1956-57 7up bottles with the Duraglas trademark. I have a 1955 Yakima Chief bottle which also carries the trademark.
It depends on if duraglas is in cursive for and the year also depends on if there is a period after the number on the right of the IO logo. Example:if there is a 3. on the right of the logo it was made 1944 & if it is 3 with no period it was made 1933
DeleteI have two presto supreme mason jars with a code of manufacture 1936 in Tracy, Ca. However they have metal lids with glass underneath and a dark red wax (?) that has seemed to melt and drip down the inside. How should I (or even should I) open them? Is this really a wax seal? Can you tell me more about them? Peggy
ReplyDeleteI am no sure, but it sounds like what you are describing is the red rubber ring that was placed on the sealing lip with a zinc lid screwed on, then processed to seal the jar. I have never seen what you describe but it sounds like the rubber ring melted. You might try placing the jar in hot water (just heat it up gradually) to soften the ring and then try to unscrew the lid. These jars were made to go into boiling water, and I put mine in the dishwasher, just don't place a cold or room temperature jar directly in boiling water.
DeleteThat's interesting that took the effort to stamp so much information into the bottom of their bottles! I've always been interested in glass blowing and glass objects because they're so beautiful and simple. That's cool that you can tell when the bottle was made by looking at the stamp. http://jessestricityglassinc.com/
ReplyDeleteHere is a stumper......the mark is the version noted at the bottom of figure 2, which is pre-1954. The date code and manufacturing point are below the IO-Diamond mark, and perpendicular to it. the code reads:
ReplyDeleteD 334
58 53
The bottle is clear, tapered outward from base to top with the base somewhat stippled, and on the rim is the phrase: "Federal Law Forbids Sale Or Reuse Of this Bottle."
The lid was a screw-on/off style as evidenced by the thread pattern (such as it is) on the lip, and the bottle was molded to give the impression that it was "cut glass"
Any ideas? Prune Juice? Orange Juice? Thanks!
HI,
DeleteDid you get an answer yet? Because I found a bottle with different numbers, but in the same configuration you described.
Thanks

G-286 Duraglos 3- 50
DeleteThe statement indicates that the bottle was used for alchohol or spirits
DeleteI agree, the D indicates it was a liquor bottle (D for Distillery #). It was mandatory for the distellery number and R # (Rectifier) to be placed on the bottles as to show they hadn't been refilled (post prohibition era).
Deleteall bottles that state federal law forbids sale or reuse of this bottle are old alcohol bottles, whiskey etc..
DeleteI have a clear 37 ounce etched Big Boy Beverages seltzer bottle with Cleveland, Ohio, embossed on the siphon spigot. The Owens-Illinois mark on the base is an "O" within a diamond. There is no "I" in the middle. There is a 9 to the left and a 9 to the right (no dots).
ReplyDeleteWould I be correct to say the bottle was manufactured at the Owens-Illinois Streator, Illinois, plant in 1939?
This is not my bottle but this photo is identical to it:
https://img0.etsystatic.com/000/0/5907208/il_570xN.155798968.jpg
If the base states 2 OZ below IO-Diamond mark, does that date it any more specifically? Glass has stippling on the bottom (base). Can not tell if it is a 0ne or two digit date. First date number pretty definitely a zero.
ReplyDeleteI just purchased an Owens Illinois piece that I will describe: A tapered hexagon shaped clear jar, 5" tall. On three sides are measurement marks - one side has marks for 4, 8, 16, and 14 ounces; another has marks for 1/2, 1, 2, and 3 cups; and the third has marks for 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 1 1/2 pints. The jar has a wide opening (about 4 1/2 inches, 5" including the lip), and the marks on the bottom indicate Plant #7, 1931, and mold #4. Can anyone tell me what this piece is and if there is a photo archive I could refer to? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis is the measuring jar that should have an electric mixer which would sit on top of it. I have one with a single beater and the mixer is tan with green handle. My jar is exactly like yours with the exception it was made in 1935.
DeleteSix years after you posted this, and I have the same jar (6-sided, 3 sides have measurements, 1930, plant #7. If I find an answer, will add it here.
DeleteI have an Owens Illinois soda sized bottle in emerald green with horizontal rounded ridges (like orange crush bottles but ridges go half way up rather then to the top) that a friend found free diving at the famous Walden Pond in Concord Massachusetts. Has the "I" in an oval and then clearly "58" to the right and "F" to the left and "12" with either a dash or a dot just above. I suppose from the Gas City plant. Or the F means from.. Fairfield Virginia (I think it was) and the 12 is something else.. Have been looking for a while with no luck: am curious what was originally in it and if it's rare and any other information! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteOwens Illinois is in my hometown of Streator IL:)
ReplyDeleteI have a 6 1/2 gallon glass bottle with the "I" in circle, a "7" on the left hand side, a "6" on the right hand side, "1974" at the top, and "ICC-10 6 1/2 gallon" at the bottom. I acquired it in 1975 or 76 from Scott AFB IL, & have used it as a terrarium ever since. I emptied it to be redone and found the bottom to have crackled. I would like to know if it is safe to reuse as a terrarium, or unsafe to use at all, and what does the ICC-10 mean? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteFrom Anonymous of Oct 30 2015, I took photos of bottom of bottle and notice that under the "I in O" there are some letters that seem to spell "MCASTD" or "MCASTO" in a curve. I would like to also know what they mean.
ReplyDeleteThanks again.
mold cast d.. maybe
DeleteI have Duraglas hand written on bottom and backside at the bottom, not on bottom. The Duraglas symbol has a I or 1 inside of symbol with numbers 9. On left side and plain 0 o right side! Also has Cc measuring on one side to 16 and other measuring on other side 5 with a weird symbol like a small3 directly on top of large 3! Anyone have an idea? Is it a 1949 bottle?
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteOK… I confused. Today I found a very nice 64oz wide mouth bottle with vertical faceting every 15/16” or so.
ReplyDeleteMarks are:
“Duraglas” embossed in script on the bottle’s heel… 1940 to sometime 50’s… perhaps later.
Under one of the two “Duraglas” marks is F1921. Perhaps a mold number.
It has the diamond IO makers mark with the “I” crossed at top and bottom. A variation of the mark. Pre ’54? Is this really pre ’54 or 1954 and prior? It does have stippling on the bottom… 1940 and later.
Plant code is 7 (Alton IL), which makes sense as it was found in Southern Wisconsin.
Date code is the real issue… a single 4 with no period... checked it with an 8x loupe...No period. Certainly not the 30’s. No embossed period so not 40 – 46.
Apparently double digit date code started in ’47.
And as it does not have the “I” oval mark, it’s not post ’54… another clarification question here… post '54 or 1954 and later?
Thus the question… What’s the year? Looks like it's down to 1940 - 1954 or '44 or '54 specifically. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks
I'm not entirely convinced on this period thing. I've had many a bottle not have the period but have duraglas embossed on the heel. Not period says 30-39 but Duraglas didn't exist so that's not possible. 2 digit dates started in 47 or 48 so I tend to ignore the period as much as I can. I take a 4 with no period and the Duraglas mark to be 1944 and 4 (no period) with no duraglas mark as 1934 or 1944.
DeleteI have two food jars that I need help with one is marked Presto glass lid with M-EK on the bottom in a circle and it says Illinois Glass Company on the bottom edge, and the other says Atlas and nothing else except a circle on the bottom, nothing in or around it. They both have glass lids with the wire closure. I need help with these, I have been everywhere on the internet and all my books and nothing. Please help. Thanks Kathy

ReplyDeleteI have a set of jars that I cant find any information on maker. It has what look to be a 0 Diamond but instead of an I it has what looks to be and sideways 8 in the diamond . I this an Owens-Illinois manufactured mark?
ReplyDeleteHere is the question of all questions... i have been to 3 sites now... what plant is #19? I have a 6oz bottle with the diamond OI symbol with the number 19 on the left and 9 (without period) on the right. Thats it... besides the name above it. Where did this bottle come from?
ReplyDeleteI have what I believe is a pickle jar, made to look like a barrel. On the bottom there is the diamond IO mark on one edge & opposite it on the other edge is a single number "1" (or possibly a lower case "L") & nothing else. No other numbers, letters or words. I've been reading every piece of info I can find on how to identify Owens-Illinois Glass Co. Trade marks in hopes of dating the jar. But everything I've read says there should be numbers to the left, right, & below the diamond IO mark & this jar only has the one number below & all the way across the bottom of the jar from the diamond IO mark. I was hoping someone could shed some light on my predicament. Please help, it's driving me crazy! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI found a one half gallon jug. from what i believe is from 1939. It has the io diamond. Single digit date code with no period. Duraglas is in script. But has the stippling on the bottom. Any thoughts on value. Or on yr producted.
ReplyDeleteI found an OI bottle with the oval in the diamond, stippling on the base, and a 1 with no Period to the right of the mark. Would this be from 1941?
ReplyDeleteJust found today, in the creek behind our house, a duraglass jar. Had the OI inside the diamond symbol. Left number is 7, right number is 8. So I'm assuming 1938. Its a small mouth, quart jar, somewhat square, not round. It has a small lattice embossed design on 3 sides. On the fourth, it has a bare, smooth, square, where it appears a label should've been. Can anyone tell me what may have originally been in this?

ReplyDeleteGreat site. I have a pretty glass candle holder which rests in a heavy decorative metal holder. The metal holder is unmarked, but the smooth glass base is embossed with a "Duraglas" script, followed by alone "l" beneath, without a diamond or circle. Also absent are date and plant codes. "PROP OF VALLEY CANDLE CO. INC" and "PAT APP FOR" encircle the proprietary marks. I have yet to run across any examples of the "l" not enclosed by either a diamond or circle, nor have any of my searches turned up any other such candleholders. Is it possible to estimate the date of production of the glass candle holder? Thanks.

ReplyDeleteJust found an amber glass bottle with the diamond IO mark with the I connected, it has a 7 to the left and a what looks like a 3. Or 3• on the right and an 8 underneath. I believe it’s from the Alton plant from 1943, but and not 100% sure. I’m also from an itty bitty town near the AL, MS state line, so any info on it is welcome
ReplyDeleteI have a Presto Supreme Mason D-13 quart jar and I can’t find any info because there are no numbers on the bottom around the OI. It does say manufactured by Owens-Illinois Glass Company. It has the small circle on the bottom. There are small air bubbles in the glass. The OI emblem is at 12:00 position and there may be something at the 10:00 and 2:00 position or it may just be the glass. I thought that if there were numbers they would be right at the side of the OI.
ReplyDeleteI have a owen Illinois 5250 crackle glass5 gallon water-wine bottle it has the owen logo with the 5250 above the I a zero to the right and a 12 below the I
ReplyDeleteHave huge clear bottle with I inside O & Diamond. Embossed cursive Duraglas script (which read 1940-1953). The plant is # 20 (1932-40) although dates Appx. No period by single digit 5, to Rt of (pre 1954 mark).
ReplyDeleteOne reply said there’s some doubts to time period. 3 questions:
1-Is closest appx date 1945 even if says plant operated till ‘40?
2-On opposite side of bottom is 3415-F. Any idea what this indicates?
3- This a a 9C jar with stippling around top 2”, flat glass in middle, & more patterning 1.5” on sides @ bottom. No stippling on very base of jar. Any idea what may have been used for? Pickle jar? Many thanks!
I’ve got a one gallon bottle with the oval in diamond, the Duraglas script at base, and a stippled bottom, however the date is just an 8 with no period; what year should this be?
ReplyDeleteMy husband was digging in the yard and found a small, clear, glass bottle. It appears to bear the Owens-Illinois logo, however without any clear marking in the middle, it's just the diamond and circle, sorta looks like Saturn. The numbers to the left of the logo is 12, on the right it's 7 and below the logo is the number 4 with a period after it (4.) --- There's no stippling or duraglass embossment on it at all. I'd post a pic of I could, but itt is roughly the length of my hand, and maybe 1/2 - 1" diameter. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteFound a Duraglas bottle whilecamping and fly fishing! This bottle is. Dry unique! Clear with hand written Duraglas on bottom with number 9. Emblem the 0 on back toward bottom Hand written signature again! On each side measuring marks like meds in Cc from 1 to 16 on other side measuring marks from 1 to 5! Assuming these are for ounces! So holds 5 ounces and smaller cc to measure differently! Clear glass very thick! Is this 1949? It also has an odd symbol like large3 with smaller3 sitting on top plus a big 3 on front with Vl or Vi!

ReplyDeleteMy grandfather passed leaving me with a basement full of antiques and two rooms of glass jars, jugs and bottles carefully placed on protected shelves that were installed from the floor to the ceilings of these two rooms. Your the first company I have seen that has created such a unique forum like this. One of the jugs I have is very heavy 19 inches tall 12 inches in diameter with a wide neck mouth that has a metal white lid and Handel and the bottom of the jug has the I inside the O with a “cracked” type look different from its smooth sides and the numbers “75” to the right of your emblem and a “6” under this as well as 5062” under the number “6”. Can you please give me any information on this jug ?
ReplyDeleteHave a gallon jug. Screw top. Has the "I in the O" mark. The manufacturer location is 14. I'm guessing Waco since it wasn't made in the 30's. The year mark is a 4. And mold number is an 8. There are no other marks. It has a finger hole with a little shelf sticking out below it to grab with your middle finger. It's clear glass with maybe. Hint of greenish blue but not much. Any help of dating?
